Mangifera Indica - A Biography of the Mango
Sopan Joshi has published a book on the Indian Mango. Just so. Not really much by any standards. For mango lovers, however, the book is the equivalent of a love story no less.
In the mango tree, Mr Joshi sees a subject as deep as the roots of mango trees found all across the Indian sub continent.
The mango, arguably is, the king of fruits. The Indian Mango or the Mangifera Indica, is also the fruit of desire, and the fruit of love. Sopan Joshi has shown that writing about the humble Indian mango tree is an act of passion.
Every aspect of the tree, is profoundly intertwined with Indian civilization. Digest that - and then come back for more.
The leaves, flowers, and fruits of the mango are depicted in paintings and sculptures, References to it are found scattered all across in Indian literature through the ages and in several languages.
It has played, and continues to play, an important role in religion, cuisine, and a variety of cultural forms. But do we really know all there is to know about this delectable fruit?
In this deeply researched and superbly written book, we go beyond the well-trodden stories of the obsessions of nawabs and kings, and breathless annual debates about the best mangoes in the world.
From the orchards where they grow, to the vibrant markets redolent with their aroma, and ultimately to our city based tables and rural fields.
Mangifera Indica describes every aspect of India’s favorite fruit that make Indian hot summers ungorgettable for generations upon generation.
Book One begins with the history, origin, and the relevance of the mango in contemporary culture, including its place in religious rituals and festivals, literature, and diplomatic relations.
Book Two takes us far back in time, 4,500 million years ago, to chart the coevolution of the ancestors of the mango and humans.
In Book Three, we traverse the length and breadth of India, encountering a kaleidoscope of mango varieties—the fragrant Alphonso, sweet Gujarati Gir Kesar, and the succulent Malihabad Uttar Pradesh Dashehri, and dozens of others
As well as never before heard stories of growers, traders, distributors, and consumers.
As we come to the summer of 2026, at MangoBag, we take a moment to pay tribute to this book of love by Sopan Joshi.
The book is an ambitious synthesis of reportage, history, biology, ecology, economics, and culture, Mangifera indica is the definitive account of India’s treasured fruit.
Sopan Joshi is an independent journalist and author based in Delhi. He entered journalism in 1996 after acquiring an MA in English literature. He has written and edited for a variety of publications. Joshi has reported on land and agriculture, water and forestry, public health and science, indigenous peoples and the environment.
I personally have known the father of Sopan Joshi from the old days, when he was the editor of the Hindi newspaper Jansatta, founded by Shri Ram Nath Goenka Ji.
